Bikes FAQs

What kind of bike should I get?

That depends on the kind of riding you want to do. Do you want to ride the streets of the city around you, or explore wilderness areas? Do you want to be blazing fast? Or do you want to be ultra-comfortable. Racing bikes are the fastest bikes available, but touring bikes are more comfortable to ride, as well as more affordable. If you’re going off road, mountain bikes come in as many flavors as there are kinds of riders, and there’s certain to be one that’s right for you.

What’s a good gear number?

Again your usage will play an important role in choosing gear numbers and ratios. If you intend to compete in races, having the right gear ratios for your body can make or break your race. More gears mean more weight, and a racing bike typically only sports 10-12 speeds. Mountain bikes on the other hand can be found with more than 27 gears on them. For a beginning rider more gears can be confusing rather than helpful, so when in doubt keep it simple.

Why type of frame is the lightest?

Hands down, carbon fiber is the lightest material that is used in bike frames. A fully formed carbon fiber bike frame can weigh in at a mere 2 lbs! A high quality aluminum frame is the next lightest, followed by steel frames. It’s important to note that a high quality steel frame will be lighter and tougher than a low quality aluminum frame, so watch what you’re buying carefully.
