Folding Bike

A folding bike, as the name implies, folds up. This is accomplished with the aid of locking hinges in the frame. A bike that folds up will usually compress to about the size of a briefcase. This is because the typical application of a folding bike is a commuter bike.

For instance if you live in New Jersey and work in New York City you will likely need to ride a train to work. From Grand Central Station it is still a sizable distance to many places in the city. Even subway stops can leave you blocks from your destination. In this case you could use a folding bike because it is compact enough to carry on public transportation with you, unlike a traditional bike.

Since they are designed primarily for commuters, folding bikes emphasize durability and compactness rather than speed or finesse. They usually come with smaller wheels and a shorter wheel base than a non folding bike. This does lead to a less comfortable ride, but when your choices are a less comfortable ride or walking at less than half the speed, your comfort really becomes a non-issue.
