Mini Bikes

Mini bikes are also known as pocket bikes. They are miniature motorcycles that were originally used to travel around the pits in drag races quickly. They worked well in this application because they were highly maneuverable and fit in the same space as a pedal bike would occupy. Because they were motorized they were much faster and could be used to carry small equipment back and forth between stations.

As the grease monkeys that used mini bikes in the pits brought them home for recreational use, the concept of the mini bike as a toy took hold. Children saw them as a kid sized motorcycle, and of course they wanted one to play with. This is a dangerous misconception, and one that parents should take note of.

A mini bike is not a toy, it is a small machine. The first one ran on lawnmower motors. If you wouldn’t trust your kid to mow the lawn unsupervised, you should not be considering buying them a mini bike. If your child is nearing driving age however, mini bikes can be a lot of fun for them, as long as you teach them the responsibility that accompanies machines like them.
